GIA Certified Diamonds — From Antwerp
Every diamond we sell carries an independent certificate from the world's most respected grading laboratory. GIA — the Gemological Institute of America — invented the 4C system and sets the global standard for diamond grading. At Diamantwerp, GIA certified stones are available directly from Antwerp's diamond district, at up to 75% below high-street retail prices.
About GIA
What is the GIA — and Why Does It Matter?
The Gemological Institute of America was founded in 1931 in Los Angeles and is today headquartered in Carlsbad, California. It is a non-profit organisation with a single mission: to protect buyers and sellers through education, research, and impartial laboratory services. GIA does not buy or sell diamonds — it only grades them. GIA certified diamonds are the benchmark for the global trade — the most widely recognised, the most consistently graded, and the most trusted standard for private buyers and jewellers alike.
In the 1950s, GIA invented the 4C system — Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat — that became the universal language of diamond grading. Before GIA, there was no standardised way to describe a diamond's quality. Today, every major grading laboratory in the world uses GIA's framework, including HRD Antwerp and IGI.
A GIA report is issued after the diamond is examined by multiple trained gemologists using calibrated equipment in a controlled environment. The result is an objective, impartial grading report — not a valuation — that describes exactly what you're buying.

Report Check
GIA created the Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat system in the 1950s — the universal diamond grading language still used by every lab worldwide.
GIA is widely regarded as the most consistent and conservative lab. A GIA G/VS2 grade means the same thing whether the diamond was graded in New York, Antwerp, or Mumbai.
GIA has no commercial interest in the stones it grades. Its revenue comes from grading fees — not diamond sales — eliminating any conflict of interest.
Lab Comparison
GIA vs HRD vs IGI — How Do They Compare?
All three labs Diamantwerp works with are independent, internationally respected, and use the same 4C framework. The differences lie in grading strictness, global recognition, price, and turnaround time.

Sample GIA Grading Report
A GIA grading report is the most trusted document in the diamond industry. Issued after examination by multiple independent gemologists, it objectively describes every quality characteristic of the stone — with no commercial interest in the outcome. Every GIA certified diamond at Diamantwerp comes with its original, unaltered report.
The report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle of every GIA certified diamond — invisible to the naked eye but verifiable in seconds at gia.edu/report-check.
This permanent inscription links the physical stone to its certificate — making it impossible to swap reports or misrepresent the diamond.
GIA Laser Inscription — Your Diamond's Fingerprint
Every GIA certified diamond has its unique report number laser-inscribed on the girdle — the thin band around the diamond's widest point. The inscription is invisible to the naked eye but clearly readable under a 10× loupe or jeweller's microscope.
This inscription is your proof of identity. It permanently links the physical stone to its GIA grading report, making it impossible to swap certificates or misrepresent the stone. At Diamantwerp, we verify every inscription matches the accompanying report before the diamond leaves our office.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions — GIA Certified Diamonds
What does GIA certified mean for a diamond?
A GIA certified diamond has been independently graded by the Gemological Institute of America — the world's most respected diamond grading laboratory. GIA assesses the diamond's cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight (the 4Cs) using strict, consistent standards. The resulting report gives you an objective, reliable description of the stone, confirmed by a laser-inscribed report number on the diamond's girdle.
Is GIA the best diamond certification?
GIA is widely regarded as the most stringent and globally recognised diamond grading lab. It invented the 4C system and the International Diamond Grading System used by virtually every lab in the world today. For buyers who want the highest confidence in the grading report, GIA is the benchmark. HRD Antwerp and IGI are also excellent, trusted labs — the right choice depends on your priorities and budget.
Are GIA certified diamonds more expensive?
GIA certified diamonds typically carry a small premium over IGI certified stones of equivalent quality — because GIA grading is generally considered stricter. However, at Diamantwerp we source directly from Antwerp's diamond district, so even GIA certified stones are priced up to 75% below what you'd pay at a traditional jeweller
How do I verify a GIA diamond certificate?
Every GIA report has a unique report number, also laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle. You can verify any GIA report for free at gia.edu/report-check. Simply enter the report number to confirm the grades and that the certificate is genuine and current.
Can I buy GIA certified diamonds directly from Antwerp?
Yes — Diamantwerp is based at Pelikaanstraat 62 in Antwerp's diamond district and offers GIA certified loose diamonds directly to consumers and jewellers worldwide. By cutting out intermediaries, you access the same GIA certified stones sold by high-street jewellers at a fraction of the price.
