Pear Diamonds

The elongating diamond shape — flattering brilliance and the illusion of greater size in every certified stone.

Pear cut diamond shape

The dramatic teardrop.

The pear shaped diamond is one of the most distinctive and versatile diamond shapes, combining the brilliance of a round with the elongation of a marquise into an elegant teardrop silhouette. First created in 1458 by Flemish polisher Lodewyk van Berquem, it remains one of the most eye-catching choices for both rings and pendants.

Every oval diamond in our collection is GIA, HRD or IGI certified and individually selected for balanced proportions and superior symmetry. Its unique pointed tip and rounded end create a dramatic, elongating effect on the finger — while its brilliant-cut facets deliver exceptional sparkle from every angle.

What makes it special

Key Characteristics

Why the pear shaped diamond stands out as one of the most dramatic and versatile choices in fine jewellery.

Maximum Elongation

The tapered point creates the most dramatic finger-lengthening effect of any diamond shape — making the hand appear longer and more slender than even an oval.

Brilliant Sparkle

As a modified brilliant cut with 58 facets, the pear delivers intense brilliance and fire. Its rounded end sparkles like a round, while the tapered point adds unique visual drama.

Ring or Pendant

The pear is uniquely versatile — equally stunning as an engagement ring (point facing outward) or as a pendant necklace where the teardrop silhouette hangs beautifully.

Appears Larger

The elongated outline gives the pear a larger face-up appearance than a round of the same carat weight — offering impressive visual impact per carat spent.

Expert Advice

Why Choose a Pear Shaped Diamond?

The Ultimate Finger-Lengthener

No diamond shape elongates the finger more dramatically than the pear. The tapered point draws the eye along the length of the hand, creating the most slenderising effect of any shape — especially when worn with the point facing toward the fingernail.

Dual Purpose: Ring & Pendant

The pear is the only diamond shape that works equally beautifully as an engagement ring and as a pendant necklace. Its teardrop silhouette hangs naturally and catches light from every direction — making it incredibly versatile.

Impressive Visual Size

The elongated shape distributes carat weight across a larger surface area, making a pear diamond appear noticeably bigger than a round of the same weight. You get maximum visual impact without stepping up in carat — or price.

Excellent Value

Pear shaped diamonds typically cost 25–35% less than a comparable round brilliant. Lower demand and efficient rough utilisation mean significant savings — while the modified brilliant facets still deliver exceptional sparkle.

A Shape With History

Created in 1458 by Flemish diamond polisher Lodewyk van Berquem right here in the Low Countries, the pear is one of the oldest fancy shapes. Its heritage connection to Belgian craftsmanship makes it especially meaningful from an Antwerp dealer.

COMMON Questions

Pear Diamond FAQ

Everything you need to know about buying a pear shaped diamond.

About Pear Shaped Diamonds

How do I protect the pointed tip of a pear diamond?

The pointed tip is the most vulnerable part of a pear diamond. We recommend a setting with a V-prong or bezel tip that wraps around and shields the point from impact. Avoid wearing the ring during heavy manual work. A well-set pear in a protective prong is perfectly durable for everyday wear.

What is the best length-to-width ratio for a pear diamond?

The classic pear ratio is between 1.50 and 1.75, with 1.55–1.65 considered the sweet spot. Ratios below 1.50 appear stubbier, while ratios above 1.75 can look overly narrow. Also check for a smooth, symmetrical curve — the two halves of the pear should be mirror images of each other.

Do pear diamonds show a bow-tie effect?

Like ovals and marquise diamonds, pear shapes can display a dark bow-tie shadow across the widest part. A minimal bow-tie is normal, but a heavy one reduces beauty significantly. At Diamantwerp, we inspect every pear for bow-tie intensity and only stock stones with minimal shadowing. Read our cut guide.

Buying from Diamantwerp

Are all your diamonds certified?

Yes — every diamond in our collection is independently certified by GIA (Gemological Institute of America), HRD Antwerp, or IGI (International Gemological Institute). These are the three most respected and internationally recognised diamond grading laboratories. Each certificate provides an objective assessment of the diamond's cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.

How can your prices be so much lower?

We buy directly from cutters and sight-holders in the Antwerp diamond district — cutting out multiple intermediaries. Our low-overhead business model means we pass the savings directly to you. Same certified diamonds, fraction of the price.

Can I view the diamond before buying?

Absolutely. You are welcome to view any diamond by appointment at our office in the Antwerp diamond district (Pelikaanstraat 62). We also offer personal delivery within Belgium and secure insured shipping across Europe. Schedule a viewing.
