A diamond certificate is an independent grading report issued by a gemological laboratory — not the jeweller selling you the stone. It objectively describes a diamond's cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
- The three trusted labs: GIA, HRD Antwerp and IGI — the only labs Diamantwerp works with.
- GIA is the strictest and most globally recognised. Best for resale value.
- HRD Antwerp is the European authority. Strong recognition in Belgium and the Middle East.
- IGI is fast and widely accepted. Preferred for lab-grown diamonds.
- Without a certificate from one of these three labs, you cannot verify a diamond's true quality.
Diamantwerp's position: Every diamond we sell above 0.30ct comes with a GIA, HRD or IGI certificate — no exceptions. Certified at Pelikaanstraat 62, Antwerp, since 1987.
What Is Diamond Certification?
Diamond certification — also called a diamond grading report — is an official document issued by an independent gemological laboratory. It provides an objective assessment of a diamond's quality based on the 4 C's: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Think of it as a diamond's passport: a detailed record that confirms exactly what you are buying.
A certificate is not the same as an appraisal. While an appraisal estimates a diamond's monetary value for insurance purposes, a grading report describes the stone's physical characteristics without assigning a price. The certificate remains valid regardless of market fluctuations, which makes it essential for resale and comparison shopping.
As a certified diamond dealer in the Antwerp diamond district since 1987, Diamantwerp works exclusively with GIA, HRD Antwerp and IGI — the three most trusted diamond grading laboratories in the world.
Why does certification matter? Without a reliable certificate, there is no way to verify whether a diamond matches the quality a seller claims. Studies suggest that uncertified diamonds are frequently overpriced by 20–50% compared to their actual grade. A certificate from a reputable laboratory protects you from overpaying and ensures transparency. Independent certification isn't just about quality — it's also a cornerstone of ethical diamond sourcing, ensuring every stone has a verifiable, conflict-free chain of custody.
What Every Diamond Certificate Includes
Every certificate from GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI covers the same core characteristics — but knowing what each section means puts you in control of your purchase. Here is what to look for, and why it matters.
A unique ID that lets you verify the certificate online through the lab's website — your first protection against forgery or substitution.
The diamond's geometric form — round brilliant, princess, oval and so on — determines how light moves through the stone.
Physical dimensions in millimetres: length × width × depth for fancy shapes, or diameter range × depth for rounds. Critical for setting compatibility.
Rated from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Each grade step affects price significantly. Full breakdown in our colour guide.
From FL (flawless) through VVS, VS, SI to I grades. Most buyers find VS2 or SI1 eye-clean at significant savings. See our clarity guide.
The most important C for visual beauty. Only GIA and HRD assign a formal cut grade for round brilliants. Our cut guide explains why Excellent matters.
A diagram mapping inclusions — your tool for matching certificate to stone. Most labs laser-inscribe the report number on the girdle as a permanent identifier.
Additional details often include polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and proportions such as table percentage, crown angle and pavilion depth. Together, these measurements give a complete picture of the diamond's optical performance.
The Three Major Diamond Grading Labs
Hundreds of gemological laboratories operate around the world, but only three have earned widespread trust among diamond professionals and consumers alike. At Diamantwerp, we work exclusively with GIA, HRD Antwerp and IGI because of their strict grading standards, global reputation and reliable consistency.
GIA — Gemological Institute of America
The global gold standard in diamond certificationFounded in 1931, GIA is a non-profit institute headquartered in Carlsbad, California. It created the 4 C's grading system and the International Diamond Grading System™ that virtually every other laboratory now follows. Because GIA operates as a non-profit with no commercial interest in the diamonds it grades, its reports are widely regarded as the most consistent and unbiased in the industry.
GIA employs advanced technology — including UV-Vis spectrophotometers and laser measuring tools — combined with multiple expert assessments. Each diamond passes through several independent graders, and results are averaged to minimise subjective variation. This rigorous approach means GIA grades tend to be stricter than those of other labs, particularly for colour and clarity.
HRD Antwerp — Hoge Raad voor Diamant
Europe's leading diamond certification authorityHRD Antwerp, which translates to the Diamond High Council, was created in 1973 as the official representative of the Belgian diamond industry. Operating from the heart of the Antwerp diamond district, HRD has strong recognition across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Its grading reports comply fully with the rules set by the International Diamond Council (IDC), jointly governed by the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association.
HRD uses a unique double-coding system that prevents graders from knowing who submitted a stone, ensuring complete objectivity. The laboratory is also known for evaluating light performance using specialised 3D software, and its digital certificates feature encrypted security codes to prevent counterfeiting. A key difference: HRD uses "Loupe Clean" (LC) as its highest clarity grade instead of "Flawless" (FL), since all grading occurs at standard 10× magnification.
IGI — International Gemological Institute
The world's largest independent gemological organisationEstablished in 1975 in Antwerp, IGI has grown into the largest independent gemological organisation worldwide, with over 20 laboratories in cities including New York, Mumbai, Hong Kong and Bangkok. IGI certifies natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, coloured gemstones and finished jewellery — making it the most versatile of the three major labs.
IGI's fast turnaround times and competitive pricing have made it popular among retailers and manufacturers. The lab has become particularly prominent in the lab-grown diamond market, where it pioneered specific grading protocols. Each IGI certificate includes an unfalsifiable hologram and can be verified online within seconds. IGI applies the same 4Cs grading criteria as GIA and HRD, though its grades can occasionally be slightly more lenient — a factor worth bearing in mind when comparing certificates across labs.
The Three Labs Compared: Our Recommendation
All three labs produce reliable, professionally graded reports. For maximum resale value and global recognition, GIA is the safest choice. For buyers in Europe, HRD Antwerp carries strong authority — especially for diamonds traded through the Antwerp diamond district. IGI is an excellent option for value-conscious buyers and for lab-grown diamonds.
Diamond certification is an independent assessment of a diamond's quality by a professional gemological laboratory. The four criteria assessed are cut, colour, clarity and carat weight — collectively known as the 4Cs. A certificate confirms these grades objectively, without reference to market value or price.
The three most trusted diamond grading laboratories are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), founded in 1931 and the creator of the 4Cs system; HRD Antwerp, the official representative of the Belgian diamond industry since 1973; and IGI (International Gemological Institute), founded in Antwerp in 1975 and now the world's largest independent gemological organisation. All three are accepted globally by dealers, insurers and auction houses.
GIA is widely considered the strictest grading laboratory. A diamond graded F/VS1 by GIA is reliably F/VS1. Some other laboratories apply more lenient standards, which can result in lower-quality diamonds being sold at premium prices. For maximum resale value and international recognition, GIA certification is the safest choice. For buyers in Europe, HRD Antwerp carries equivalent authority.
Diamantwerp, certified diamond dealer at Pelikaanstraat 62 in the Antwerp diamond district since 1987, works exclusively with GIA, HRD Antwerp and IGI. Every diamond above 0.30ct is certified. No exceptions.

Diamond Sealing and Laser Inscription
When a laboratory certifies a diamond, the stone can be sealed inside a tamper-proof transparent container — linking the certificate physically to the diamond. If the seal is intact, it guarantees that the diamond inside matches the certificate exactly. Sealing also keeps the stone clean and protected from oils and dirt.
As an alternative or addition to sealing, laboratories offer laser inscription: a microscopic engraving of the certificate number directly on the diamond's girdle. This inscription is invisible to the naked eye and can only be read under magnification. It provides a permanent form of identification, useful for insurance claims, theft recovery and personal peace of mind.
GIA includes laser inscription as standard on most reports. HRD and IGI offer it as an optional service. At Diamantwerp, the majority of our diamonds come sealed or laser-inscribed for your protection.
Why Diamantwerp Works Exclusively with GIA, HRD and IGI
Dozens of other laboratories exist — including EGL, AGS, NGTC and various regional labs. While some of these may be competent, many apply inconsistent or overly generous grading standards. A diamond graded "F colour, VS1" by a less reputable lab might receive a lower grade from GIA or HRD Antwerp, which means you could be overpaying for a stone that does not match its certificate.
We chose to work exclusively with GIA, HRD and IGI for three reasons:
- Consistency. These labs produce reliable, repeatable results. A grade on their certificate accurately reflects the diamond's true quality.
- Global recognition. Whether you buy, sell or insure your diamond anywhere in the world, certificates from these three labs are universally accepted.
- Transparency. Every certificate can be verified online through the issuing lab's database, giving you complete confidence in your purchase.
As a family-run diamond dealer in Antwerp since 1987, our reputation depends on the quality of every stone we sell. Working with the world's most trusted labs is a fundamental part of that commitment.

How to Read a Diamond Certificate
Reading a diamond certificate can seem overwhelming at first, but once you understand the key sections, it becomes straightforward. Here is what to focus on:
- Verify the report number. Visit the lab's website and enter the unique report number. This confirms the certificate is genuine and has not been altered. If the number does not appear in the database — or the certificate has no number at all — do not proceed with the purchase.
- Check the 4 C's. Compare the cut, colour, clarity and carat grades against your expectations and budget. Each grade step affects price — understanding the scale prevents you from overpaying for quality you cannot see.
- Review proportions. For round brilliants, look at the table percentage (ideally 54–58%), crown angle (ideally 34–35°) and pavilion depth (ideally 42–44%). For fancy shapes such as oval, princess or emerald, focus on the length-to-width ratio and total depth percentage instead.
- Check fluorescence. Slight fluorescence (None to Faint) has no visible impact. Strong fluorescence can sometimes make a diamond appear hazy in daylight, but can also reduce cost — making it a potential value opportunity for informed buyers.
- Study the clarity plot. The diagram shows where inclusions are located. Centre inclusions are more likely to be visible; edge inclusions can often be hidden by a setting. Cross-reference the plot with the physical stone under magnification.
If a certificate has no verifiable report number, comes from an unrecognised laboratory, or the grades seem unusually high for the price — treat it as a warning sign. At Diamantwerp, every diamond above 0.30ct comes with a GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI certificate you can verify online in seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Diamond Certification
Is a diamond certificate the same as a diamond appraisal?
No. A certificate (grading report) describes a diamond's physical characteristics — cut, colour, clarity and carat — without assigning a monetary value. An appraisal estimates the diamond's market value, typically for insurance purposes. You need both: a certificate for quality verification and an appraisal for insurance coverage. Every diamond at Diamantwerp comes with a certificate from GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI.
Do diamond certificates expire?
A diamond's physical properties do not change over time, so the grading on a certificate remains valid indefinitely. However, if a diamond is damaged, re-cut, or if you suspect the certificate may not match the stone, it is wise to have the diamond re-certified by GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI.
Can the same diamond receive different grades from different labs?
Yes, this is possible. Grading involves expert judgement, and laboratories apply slightly different standards. A diamond graded G colour by GIA might receive an F from a more lenient lab. This is precisely why choosing a reputable laboratory matters — the grade should accurately reflect the stone's true quality. At Diamantwerp, we work exclusively with the three strictest labs to protect your investment.
Should I only buy GIA-certified diamonds?
GIA is the strictest and most globally recognised lab, but HRD Antwerp and IGI also produce reliable certificates. In Europe, HRD carries strong authority, particularly for diamonds traded through the Antwerp diamond district. The best choice depends on your priorities: maximum resale value (GIA), European recognition (HRD), or value and lab-grown (IGI).
How can I verify if a diamond certificate is genuine?
All three major labs offer free online verification. Enter the certificate's unique report number on the lab's website:
Are Diamantwerp diamonds always certified?
Yes. Every diamond we sell above 0.30 carat comes with a certificate from GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI. We believe certification is essential — it is what allows us to offer up to 75% below traditional retail with full transparency.
