Your Guide to Round Diamonds
Setting recommendations for round brilliants
Antwerp is the world's diamond capital — over 80% of the world's rough diamonds pass through the city's diamond district each year. Buying certified round diamonds in Antwerp means buying direct from the source, without the retail markups that come with jewellers or international online platforms. At Diamantwerp, our office sits at the heart of the district, allowing us to source round brilliants directly from cutters and sight-holders and pass the savings to you.
What to expect to pay for certified round diamonds
The round brilliant suits virtually every ring setting. The most popular choices are the classic 4- or 6-prong solitaire, which maximises light entry and shows off the stone's brilliance. A halo setting adds visual presence and makes the centre stone appear larger. Pavé bands complement the round's symmetry without competing with it. For those looking for maximum sparkle, a triple excellent cut round brilliant set in a thin platinum band remains the timeless benchmark.
Round Brilliant Diamonds in Antwerp
Price depends heavily on the 4 C's, but as a general guide: a well-cut round brilliant at G colour and VS2 clarity will cost approximately €1,200–€1,800 for a 0.50ct stone, €2,500–€4,000 for a 1.00ct, and €8,000–€14,000 for a 2.00ct.
At Diamantwerp, our prices are typically 75% below what you would pay at a traditional jeweller for the same certified stone.
Round diamonds and certification
Because the round brilliant is the only shape for which GIA issues a full cut grade, certification matters more for this shape than any other. A GIA Excellent cut round is a measurable, objective standard — not a subjective claim. When buying a certified round diamonds, always verify the certificate number on the lab's website before purchase. Every stone at Diamantwerp comes with a certificate from GIA, HRD or IGI.

Whether you are buying a round brilliant for an engagement ring, as a gift, or as a long-term investment, purchasing a certified stone from a verified Antwerp dealer is the single most important step you can take to protect both its value and your confidence in the purchase.

Common Questions
Certified Round Diamonds FAQ
Everything you need to know about buying a round brilliant diamond.
Why is the round brilliant the most expensive shape?
Round brilliants require the most rough diamond waste during cutting — up to 50% of the original stone is lost. Combined with the highest demand of any shape, this makes them the premium option. However, at Diamantwerp we offer certified round diamonds (GIA, HRD Antwerp, or IGI) at up to 75% below traditional retail prices.
What is the ideal cut grade for a round brilliant?
We recommend 'Excellent' or 'Very Good' cut grades for round brilliants. Cut has the greatest impact on a diamond's beauty — more than colour or clarity. Read our cut guide for details.
What colour grade should I choose?
For a round diamond, grades D–F are colourless and command a premium. Grades G–H offer excellent value — they face up white and are virtually indistinguishable from colourless grades to the naked eye. Read our colour guide.
What clarity grade should I choose for a round brilliant?
For a round brilliant, VS2 or SI1 offer the best value. The brilliant facet pattern disperses light so effectively that small inclusions are far harder to see than in step-cut shapes like emerald or asscher. A well-cut round at SI1 will face up eye-clean in the vast majority of cases — at a significantly lower price than VVS grades. We recommend avoiding SI2 without viewing the stone first, as clarity can vary within the same grade. Read our clarity guide for the full breakdown.
What is a Triple Excellent grade and should I insist on it?
Triple Excellent (3EX) is the highest cut grade awarded by GIA — it means the diamond scores Excellent in cut, polish and symmetry simultaneously. It is only available for round brilliants, because GIA only issues a cut grade for the round brilliant shape; no other shape can achieve a certified 3EX.
For a round brilliant, we recommend Excellent or Very Good cut as a minimum — cut is the single biggest driver of brilliance and fire, more than colour or clarity. That said, Triple Excellent is not always necessary. A well-cut Excellent/Very Good stone with strong light performance can be visually indistinguishable from a 3EX at a lower price point. Where 3EX matters most is if you're buying as an investment, or if you want the highest possible resale value — 3EX rounds command a premium on the secondary market and are always easier to sell.
Our recommendation: prioritise Excellent cut, then check the Hearts & Arrows pattern or AGS light performance report if available. If 3EX fits your budget, take it — but don't sacrifice colour or clarity to chase the grade.
How can your prices be so much lower?
We buy directly from cutters and sight-holders in the Antwerp diamond district — cutting out multiple intermediaries. Our low-overhead business model means we pass the savings directly to you. Same certified loose diamonds, fraction of the price.
