What Are the 4 C's of Diamond?
The value and beauty of a diamond are determined by four key characteristics, universally known as the 4 C's: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. Introduced by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1950s, this grading system replaced centuries of vague, inconsistent descriptions — giving buyers a reliable way to compare diamonds objectively.
Today, every reputable laboratory — including GIA, HRD Antwerp and IGI — uses the 4 C's to grade and certify diamonds. Understanding these four factors is the single best way to avoid overpaying and find a diamond that truly matches your expectations. As certified diamond dealers in Antwerp since 1987, we apply these exact criteria when selecting every diamond in our collection.
No single "C" determines a diamond's beauty alone. It's the combination of all four that creates a stone's unique character and value — and understanding the trade-offs between them is the key to finding the best diamond for your budget.

What's it all about
The 4 C's at a Glance
A quick summary of each grading factor — click any card to explore in detail.
Cut
How well a diamond's facets interact with light. Determines brilliance, fire and sparkle.
Colour
The absence of colour in a white diamond. Less colour means higher grade and greater rarity.
Clarity
The presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Fewer imperfections = higher clarity.
Carat
The diamond's weight. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger stones are exponentially rarer.
The 5th C — Certification
The 4 C's tell you what a diamond is. A certificate proves it. Without an independent grading report, you're relying on the seller's word alone. At Diamantwerp, every diamond comes with certification from GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI — so you know exactly what you're buying.
01
The First C
Cut: The Most Important C
Cut is widely considered the most important of the 4 C's because it has the greatest influence on a diamond's sparkle and visual appeal. A well-cut diamond reflects light internally from one facet to another, then disperses it through the top of the stone — creating that mesmerising brilliance, fire and scintillation.
It's important to understand that "cut" does not refer to a diamond's shape (round, oval, princess, etc.), but to the quality of its proportions, symmetry and polish. Two diamonds of the same shape and carat weight can look completely different depending on how well they're cut.

Diamantwerp tip: Always prioritise cut quality. A diamond with excellent cut but slightly lower colour or clarity will often appear more beautiful than a higher-graded diamond with a mediocre cut. Our prices — up to 75% below traditional retail — mean you can invest in superior cut quality without stretching your budget.

Diamantwerp tip: For the best balance of beauty and value, we recommend G or H colour. These diamonds face up white to the naked eye and offer significant savings compared to D–F grades. If you're setting the diamond in yellow or rose gold, you can comfortably go to I or J.
02
The Second C
Colour: The Absence of Hue
Diamond colour grading actually measures the absence of colour. The GIA colour scale starts at D (completely colourless — the most rare and valuable) and continues to Z (noticeable light yellow or brown tint). The less colour present in a natural white diamond, the higher its grade and value.
The truth is that most colour differences are invisible to the untrained eye, especially once a diamond is set in jewellery. The difference between a D-colour and a G-colour diamond is virtually undetectable in normal viewing conditions — but the price difference can be substantial.
Colourless. Extremely rare and most expensive.
Near colourless. Excellent value — face-up white.
Slight warmth detectable. Great for yellow gold settings.
Increasingly noticeable colour. Lower value for white diamonds.
03
The Third C
Clarity: Nature's Fingerprint
Clarity measures the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface imperfections (blemishes). Since diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure deep within the Earth, nearly all contain tiny natural "birthmarks." The fewer and less visible these characteristics, the higher the clarity grade — and the rarer (and more expensive) the diamond.
The GIA clarity scale ranges from FL (Flawless) — no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10× magnification — to I3 (Included), where inclusions are obvious to the naked eye and may affect transparency or brilliance.

Diamantwerp tip: The sweet spot for value is VS2 or SI1. At these grades, inclusions are invisible to the naked eye (what the industry calls "eye-clean"), yet you save significantly compared to VVS or Flawless grades. The key is to review each diamond individually — some SI1 diamonds are perfectly eye-clean, while others aren't.

Diamantwerp tip: Buy just below the "magic numbers" — a 0.90 ct diamond can look virtually identical to a 1.00 ct stone but costs significantly less. The same applies at 0.50, 1.50, and 2.00 ct. And remember: a well-cut diamond of lower carat weight often appears larger than a poorly cut heavier stone, because more of the weight is distributed across the face-up surface area.
04
The Fourth C
Carat: Size & Rarity
Carat is the standard unit of weight for diamonds and gemstones. One carat equals 0.200 grams (about the weight of a paper clip). The term originates from the carob seeds that ancient gem traders used as counterweights on balance scales, because the seeds were remarkably uniform in weight.
Larger diamonds are exponentially rarer than smaller ones, which means price doesn't increase linearly with carat weight. A 2-carat diamond doesn't cost twice as much as a 1-carat stone of equal quality — it can cost three to four times as much, because large gem-quality rough is so scarce.
How the 4 C's Work Together
Prioritise Cut
For buyers who want the most visually stunning diamond possible, regardless of size.
- Cut: Excellent only
- Colour: G – H
- Clarity: VS2 – SI1
- Carat: Flexible
The Balanced Approach
Our most recommended strategy. Balances beauty, size and budget for the ideal result.
- Cut: Excellent – Very Good
- Colour: F – H
- Clarity: VVS2 – VS2
- Carat: Just below magic numbers
Prioritise Carat
For buyers who want the largest possible stone. Trade down on colour and clarity to maximise carat weight.
- Cut: Very Good minimum
- Colour: G – I
- Clarity: SI1 – SI2 (eye-clean)
- Carat: Maximise
