Expert Advice

Why Choose a Certified Marquise Cut Diamond?

The marquise cut diamond — named after the Marquise de Pompadour and commissioned by King Louis XV of France in 1745 — is one of the most historically significant and visually dramatic diamond shapes in existence. Its elongated boat-shaped outline and pointed tips at both ends create the largest face-up appearance of any popular diamond shape, maximising visual size per carat like no other cut.

Presence

Maximum Face-Up Size Per Carat

The marquise has the largest face-up surface area of any popular diamond shape. Its elongated outline covers more finger real estate per carat than a round, oval or pear — creating a bold, unmistakable visual impact that commands attention from across the room.

Silhouette

The Ultimate Finger-Elongating Shape

The marquise's extreme length-to-width ratio creates the most pronounced finger-lengthening effect of any diamond shape. Worn north-south with both points along the finger, it creates a slim, elegant look that is unmatched by any other popular cut.

Value

Excellent Value Per Carat

Marquise diamonds typically cost 20–30% less than a comparable round brilliant of the same carat weight — yet appear significantly larger face-up due to their elongated outline. You receive more visible diamond per euro spent than with almost any other shape.

Heritage

Over 275 Years of Royal History

The marquise cut dates to 1745 and the court of Louis XV of France — one of the oldest fancy shapes still in widespread use today. Choosing a marquise is choosing a shape with genuine historic pedigree, worn by royalty and aristocracy for nearly three centuries.

Brilliance

Brilliant-Cut Sparkle

Despite its antique origins, the marquise is a fully brilliant cut — its facets are arranged to maximise light return and fire. The result is a stone that combines historic elegance with modern sparkle intensity, delivering the scintillation of a round brilliant in a dramatically different outline.

Demand

A Resurgent Vintage Classic

The marquise has experienced a significant revival in demand since 2022, driven by the broader trend toward distinctive vintage-inspired engagement ring shapes. Its rarity relative to ovals and pears means a marquise ring stands out in any crowd — making it an increasingly popular choice for buyers seeking something genuinely different.

Expert Advice

Your Guide to Marquise Cut Diamonds

Setting recommendations for certified marquise cut diamonds

The marquise has two pointed tips — one at each end — and both are vulnerable to chipping if left unprotected. V-prongs at each tip are essential: they shield the points without obscuring the diamond's outline. A bezel setting eliminates the risk entirely but partially covers the elongated silhouette, which is the marquise's defining feature. For maximum visual impact, a 6-prong setting with V-prongs at both tips is the classic choice.

The marquise is traditionally set north-south along the finger, but east-west settings — where the stone lies perpendicular to the finger — have grown significantly in popularity and create a bold, contemporary look. Halo settings amplify the already generous face-up size. Three-stone designs work beautifully with tapered baguette or trillion side stones that echo the marquise's pointed geometry.

What to expect to pay for certified marquise cut diamonds

Marquise diamonds offer excellent value. As a general guide at G colour and VS2 clarity: approximately €700–€1,100 for a 0.50ct stone, €1,400–€2,400 for a 1.00ct, €2,500–€4,200 for a 1.50ct, and €5,500–€9,000 for a 2.00ct.

At Diamantwerp, our prices are typically 75% below what you would pay at a traditional jeweller for the same certified stone.

Marquise Cut Diamonds in Antwerp

Antwerp is the world's diamond capital — over 80% of the world's rough diamonds pass through the city's diamond district each year. Buying certified natural diamonds in Antwerp means purchasing direct from the source, with none of the retail markups added by high-street jewellers or international online platforms.

At Diamantwerp, our office on Pelikaanstraat 62 sits at the heart of the Antwerp diamond district, allowing us to source marquise cut diamonds directly from cutters and sight-holders and pass the savings to you.

Marquise Cut Diamonds and certification

Unlike round brilliants — which can achieve a Triple Excellent cut grade from GIA — marquise cut diamonds receive no standardised cut grade. GIA grades marquise diamonds on polish and symmetry only. For a marquise, symmetry is particularly critical: any asymmetry between the two pointed tips or the two curved sides is immediately visible and significantly impacts beauty.

When assessing a certified marquise, check the length-to-width ratio (ideally 1.75–2.15), verify that both tips align perfectly on the central axis, inspect the severity of any bow-tie effect, and ensure the belly curves are symmetrical. Every marquise diamond at Diamantwerp comes with a verified certificate from GIA, HRD or IGI — and our team walks you through the proportions before you commit.

Four things to understand before you purchase a certified marquise diamond — from protecting the two vulnerable pointed tips, to realistic pricing, to what makes Antwerp the smartest place to buy, and why symmetry matters more in a marquise than in almost any other shape.

Common Questions

Certified Marquise Cut Diamonds FAQ

Everything you need to know about buying a marquise diamond.

How important is symmetry in a marquise diamond?

Symmetry is more critical in a marquise than in almost any other shape. The two pointed tips must align perfectly on the central axis — even a slight deviation is immediately visible and distracts from the stone's elegance. The two curved sides (the "bellies") must also be mirror images of each other. Always inspect a marquise in person or via high-quality video before purchasing, and check that the GIA, HRD or IGI certificate shows "Good" or "Excellent" symmetry.

What is the best length-to-width ratio for a marquise?

The classic marquise ratio is between 1.75 and 2.15. Ratios below 1.75 appear stubbier and lose the dramatic elongating effect the shape is famous for. Ratios above 2.15 can look overly narrow and accentuate the bow-tie. The most popular range is 1.85–2.00 — long enough to be distinctly marquise-shaped, balanced enough to avoid looking pinched. Always verify the ratio on the certificate.

Do marquise diamonds show a bow-tie effect?

Yes — most marquise diamonds show some degree of bow-tie, a dark shadow across the centre of the stone caused by light leakage in the elongated middle section. A subtle bow-tie is normal and virtually unavoidable. A severe bow-tie significantly reduces brilliance and beauty. Always view a marquise diamond in video or under direct light — not just in still photography — before purchasing. At Diamantwerp, we inspect every marquise for minimal bow-tie before adding it to our inventory.

What colour grade should I choose for a marquise diamond?

The marquise's elongated shape and pointed tips can concentrate colour at the ends, making lower colour grades more visible than in a round. For a white appearance in platinum or white gold, G or H colour is the sweet spot — both face up near-colourless and represent excellent value. D–F is worth the premium for a solitaire with maximum exposure. In a yellow gold setting, I–J is acceptable and saves significantly. Read our full guide on diamond colour.

How can your prices be so much lower?

We buy directly from cutters and sight-holders in the Antwerp diamond district — cutting out multiple intermediaries. Our low-overhead business model means we pass the savings directly to you. The same certified loose diamonds from Antwerp, at a fraction of the price. Browse diamonds by budget: under €2,000, under €5,000 or under €10,000.

Is a marquise diamond suitable for an engagement ring?

The marquise is one of the most striking and historically significant engagement ring shapes available. Its extreme length creates the most pronounced finger-elongating effect of any popular shape — and its pointed tips at both ends give it a bold, unmistakable silhouette that stands out from the far more common round, oval and pear.

The two pointed tips require V-prong protection at each end — a non-negotiable for daily wear. With the correct setting, the marquise is no more fragile in practice than a pear or princess. We recommend a minimum of 0.50ct so the boat-shaped outline reads clearly, with 0.70ct or above being the most popular choice for solitaire rings.
